Church Grounds

Church Grounds

For the last couple of years, St. Michael's extensive grounds have been tended by just a handful of hard-working volunteers from our congregation. They have pruned trees, cut hedges, cleared undergrowth, and kept the grass mown, not to mention power-washing the play area. But the task of managing the whole site, including the extensive planted borders, and the former wildflower meadow, is too big for them alone.

This year St. Michael's PCC decided that it must take action to tackle the overgrown borders so that they enhance, rather than detract from, our beautiful Edwardian church building. The plan is to simplify the whole area for ease of maintenance, and to make the grounds attractive and colourful for both our church members and the local community.

At the end of October 2022, fourteen people braved the weather to start on the big clear up. Armed with spades, loppers and wheelbarrows we set to work on the overgrown beds and shrubs.

Fortified by coffee and lunch served by a kitchen stalwart the group cheerfully ploughed on

through heavy rain, determined to make a difference.

How we managed to cram so much into the skip is a gardeners' secret!

There is still much work to do and future working parties will be planned for next Spring and the end of Summer. In the meantime, the volunteers agreed to work to their own flexible time-tables and to take responsibility for a particular area or task in order to continue to work We know that this will take time as there's a lot of work to be done but with a little help from mother nature and our amazing volunteers (new ones welcome), we'll get there.
